About MIMGIG

Math in Motion…Girls in Gear! is an annual outreach event of the department of Computer and Mathematical Sciences (CMS) at the University of Toronto Scarborough (UTSC). The event is organized and run by a motivated and dedicated committee of women, most of whom are alumni or faculty of CMS. The group strongly believe in the promotion of girls and women in STEM.

The first Math in Motion…Girls in Gear! was a Durham District School Board event organized by Judy Shanks in 2004. In 2012 CMS adopted the conference and since then this annual event hosts girls from across the Greater Toronto Area.

The one-day conference inspires and motivates young girls to pursue mathematical studies. Introduction and keynote speakers from women professionals explain how a math education shaped their own careers. Interactive fun workshops involving mathematical principles are presented by female role models. A team design challenge and other activities help build networking.
